Roma played in Genova at Stadio Luigi Ferraris against Genoa. The match ended 1-1 which made Roma the champions of Italy for the second time.
On week later in Rome on May 15th Roma played the last match of the season against Torino (a lot of the pictures in this post are form that match) and celebrated in Stadio Olimpico (before it was renovated).

Roma played in Genova at Stadio Luigi Ferraris against Genoa. The match ended 1-1 which made Roma the champions of Italy for the second time.

Between the ultras from Roma and Salernitana there is relationship of respect. Note that this is not a “gemellaggio”, but a form of respect which dates back to the 1998/99 season.
The reason for the banner last night was that Salernitana is now mathematically relegated to Serie B.
Roma and Salernitana also both have a fierce rivalry with Napoli.

The reason was that in the match before against Dynamo Kiev the Swedish referee Anders Frisk was hit by a coin thrown from the home crowd. UEFA punish AS Roma with two home matches behind closed doors. Therefore Stadio Olimpico was completely empty for this match.

The second time the two clubs faced each other was again in the Champions League group stage, this time Roma won 3-2. The match was played in a bit of an unusual atmosphere because the Curva Sud was left half empty due to protest from the Roma ultras. There were protesting that the Curva Sud at the time was divided in two with tall glass fences. The fences were later removed.

The first leg of the Europa League semifinals, Roma won 1-0 and when the second leg ended 0-0 in Germany it sent AS Roma to the Europa League final in Budapest. This time the Stadio Olimpico and Curva Sud was full and alive. The choreography in Curva Sud read (in latin): “Amor Romee nostra lex” (Love of Rome is our law).

🇮🇹 Today Napoli-Roma. But Roma fans are banned from traveling to the fixture. This is the story about the Derby del Sole, named after the “Autostrada del Sole” (the motorway, that connects the two cities).
Roma was founded in 1927 and Napoli in 1926. They were the first teams from central and southern Italy to be admitted into the Italian football league (Lega Calcio). They both set out to become a force against the strong northern teams and had a lot in common from the early years.
In the 1980’s it developed into a “gemellaggio”. At the time every Derby del Sole was a celebration of the friendship.
But the “gemellaggio” was broken on October 25th 1987 at Stadio Olimpico. After the usual exchange of flags between fans in the middel of the pitch, the Napoli fans were meet with insults from the Roma fans. After the game Napoli player Salvatore Bagni made offensive gestures directed at the Curva Sud. Some years before the “gemellaggio” had started to break. In 1985 Lazio player Bruno Giordano moved to Napoli and the Roma supporters had difficulties seeing past that Napoli had bought one of their old enemies.
Derby del Sole devolved into a high risk match. In the 1990s and 2000s there were a lot of clashed between fans.
The worst moment was on May 3rd 2014 before the final of Coppa Italia (Napoli-Fiorentina) in Rome. Roma wasn’t even playing but before the match Roma fans attacked Napoli fans. During the clashes the 31 year old Napoli supporter Ciro Esposito was hit by gunshot and died 50 days later in hospital.
The death of Ciro Esposito (RIP) sparked the Napoli fans to hate Roma even more.
Ever since the Roma-Napoli matches have been played without away fans from the respective cities, only allowing a small segment of “local away fans” into the away section. This ban of away fans continues today.
A resent episode was on January 8th 2023 when around 300 ultras from Roma and Napoli clashed in the middle of the A1 motorway, both on their way to away matches.
Tonight in Napoli another Derby del Sole will be played for sure in a hostile atmosphere and only with very few local Roma fans present in the away section.

In the next couple of weeks we will go into the relationships between Italians fans from different clubs. We will be focusing on the relationships that fans of Lazio and Roma have got with other clubs. It is important to know that there are different stages of good relations between fans. In Italy the “gemellaggio” (twinning) is the strongest level. Secondly you have a level friendship or simply good relations and respect.
The level between Lazio and Verona fans is a form of good relations and respect, and not a real “gemellaggio”. Both set of fans have demonstrated this on several occasions with banners and greetings. Also meaning that this fixture is low risk from a police perspective.
The good relations between Lazio and Verona is partly founded in the shared political views. Both sets of ultras are traditionally know to have right-wing political views. Another thing that helped the good relations was in 2012 when former Lazio player Paolo Di Canio, in a video he said a lot of positive things about the Verona fans and that he had a lot of respect for the Curva Sud Verona. Last but not least both have an enemy in common, which is Napoli.

This week billboards and mega posters all over Rome are displaying some of the heroes from 1974. Among them Felice Pulici, Vincenzo D’Amico, Mario Frustalupi, Pino Wilson and of course the all time Lazio megastar Giorgio Chinaglia.

November 12th 2023: For this Rome Derby the Curva Sud displays a large banner with Mars (the Roman god of war). Below another banner saying “Discendenti di Marte, padroni della storia” (Descendants of Mars, masters of history).
When the Roma fans did the choreography, they had some troubles unfolding the big banner, and Lazio fans didn’t miss the opportunity to point this out to the Curva Sud.
January 10th 2024: The following Rome Derby in Coppa Italia. The Curva Nord displayed a big banner with Mars (similar to the Roma version) and in front of the stand a banner with the same text as the Curva Sud used a few months earlier. The story is that Lazio fans made their banner look an unfold poorly, to make fun of the Curva Sud choreography and displayed a banner saying: “This is what you force us to watch at every derby”. In the end a banner saying “Figli unici di Roma” (Only children of Rome).
The legend says that the city of Rome was founded by the two twins Romulus and Remus (used in the AS Roma logo). They were raised by the shewolf (also used as a symbol of Rome). According to Roman mythology the father of the two twins is Mars. Therefore Romans consider themselves as descendants of Mars.
History plays a very big part of the life in Rome, and therefore the Romans also bring this into the stadium. In this case it was also a battle of who would be the true descendants of Mars and therefore the true Romans.

This is the story about why the name of Antonio De Falchi, is always associated with the Roma-Milan matches.
On Sunday the 4th of June 1989 Roma fan Antonio De Falchi arrived along with friends at San Siro in Milan. It was hours before the Milan-Roma match. Upon arrival outside the stadium they were attacked by a group of Milan fans and Antonio got heavily beaten. He didn’t make it. He was beaten into a coma and died in Milan. He was 18 years old and died because he was a Roma fan on the wrong place in Milan that day.
Almost 35 years has passed, but Roma fans have never forgotten it.
In the Curva Sud you will still today see flags and banners with his name and face. And around Rome you can find his name and picture on the walls of the eternal city.

The Netherlands, Scotland and Germany are so far the countries I have visited with Groundhopping Tours.
All trips have been absolutely fantastic, and there have been both top matches on the program and matches right down in the lower ranks.

A very good experience
A very good experience with Groundhopping Tours, from pre-booking inquiry over booking and info before departure to arrival at the hotel and the entire setup in Dortmund (where we saw Dortmund vs Gladbach) with stadium tour on Friday, match on Saturday and generally just good recommendations for the trip.
Groundhopping Tours gets my absolute warmest recommendation.

Good experience for Boca Juniors match
We were in Buenos Aires on holiday and bought tickets through Groundhopping Tours for Boca Juniors' home game.
Everything about the match worked perfectly with the local guide, so there was no reason for insecurity or confusion about the slightly complicated access procedure.
Things are under control when you buy tickets here - even if it's on the other side of the globe.
