What to experience on your football trip to AS Roma

Take in the atmosphere from the Curva Sud

The match on Stadio Olimpico is of course the main event of your football trip to Rome. The stadium holds 70.000 fans and the AS Roma fans are know for being very passionate about their team, but none are more passionate than the fans in the Curva Sud (the south stand) which holds 19.000 fans.

Here you find the different groups of organized ultras. The Curva Sud is full of flags, banners, fireworks, and often big choreographies are displayed when the two teams enter the pitch. For any AS Roma match you will find yourself with one eye on the match and one eye on the Curva Sud.

    Do the Stadio Olimpico Tour

No football trip to Rome is complete without doing the tour of Stadio Olimpico. The tour takes you to the museum of Stadio Olimpico, the locker room of AS Roma, and finally to the sideline of the pitch and the VIP area of the Monte Mario stand.

Tours starts every hour during week days and every half hour during weekends. Note that the tour is closed on match days. Book your ticket for the tour at stadioolimpicotour.vivaticket.it.

Go here: Viale dei Gladiatori 2

Have dinner at Core de Roma

Of course you will need to try some local roman recipes and specialities when visiting the city. The saying goes that you have not been to Rome if you have not tried a roman spaghetti carbonara or amatriciana.

What better place to go than restaurant Core de Roma (the name in roman dialect translates to “Heart of Rome”). The restaurant is located close to the Porta Metronia neighbourhood (where Totti is from) and the owner is a very passionate AS Roma fan. He has decorated the entire place with Roma shirts, flags, and pictures.

    Go here: Via Vetulonia 27

Enjoy pre-match with AS Roma fans

Before the match you should pass by the area in front of the entrance to Curva Sud, which is the home stand of the most passionate AS Roma fans.

Here you will find an entire street full of Roma fans, bars and small restaurants. It is the best place to get a beer and a pizza slice with some local Roma fans before the match.

Go here: Corner of Ponte Duca d’Aosta and Lungotevere Maresciallo Diaz.

    See the Totti street art

Roman born Francesco Totti played 19 seasons for AS Roma. He played a total of 786 matches and scored 307 goals for the club. He never changed teams. He only played for the club of his heart, AS Roma. In Rome, Totti will always be an eternal hero.

Around Rome you will see a lot of street art dedicated to Francesco Totti. One of the most famous wall paintings, of Totti pointing to the sky, you will find in the central neighbourhood of Monti (close to the Colosseum). You will find more recent ones in the Porta Metronia neighbourhood and close to Piazza Navona.

Go here: Via del Pozzuolo 11 (Monti), Via Apulia/Via Farsalo (Porta Metronia) and Vicolo Savelli (close to Piazza Navona)

Shop in one of the AS Roma stores

If you want to go to the match wearing an official AS Roma shirt, you should pass by one of the many AS Roma stores in the city center. You can find an official store on Via del Corso and in Piazza Colonna.

Note that many shops in Rome are selling AS Roma merchandise. In front of the stadium on match days you will also have unlimited possibilities of buying a scarf, a cap, or a shirt. But keep in mind, that a lot of the merchandise sold outside the official stores is not original.

Go here: Via del Corso 26-27 or Piazza Colonna 360.

    Visit the Testaccio neighbourhood

Just south of the city center lies the old roman neighbourhood of Testaccio. Most residents here are AS Roma fans and you will find the area decorated in the yellow-red colors of the club. Here you will also find an AS Roma fan club on Via Giovanni Branca, and street art of the former AS Roma manager José Mourinho on Via Pietro Querini.

The birth of AS Roma is discussed a lot. The club officially recognizes it to be on the 7th of June 1927, but most fans believe it to be on the 22nd of July 1927. Every year on the 22nd of July, the whole neighbourhood of Testaccio goes into party mode and fans from the whole city meet up to celebrate the foundation of their beloved club.

    Go here: Piramide (Metro station)

🇮🇹 For the Rome Derby last week, the Curva Nord displayed a choreography with “W la Lazio” which translates into “Long live Lazio”. 🇮🇹 Having your picture painted on the walls of Rome is a great honour. Only for the few and the true heroes. This Daniele De Rossi streetart you find in the Monti neighbourhood in central Rome, in Via dei Capocci 4.

Daniele De Rossi played 18 seasons for AS Roma and was born in the Rome seaside neighbourhood of Ostia, which makes him a true Roman. His last season for his beloved AS Roma as a player was in 2019.

In January 2024 he came back to as coach for the giallorossi. So far with great success.

The next football trip will also be with Groundhopping Tours

The Netherlands, Scotland and Germany are so far the countries I have visited with Groundhopping Tours.

All trips have been absolutely fantastic, and there have been both top matches on the program and matches right down in the lower ranks.

I can only recommend Groundhopping Tours - so they will also plan my next football trip.

    A very good experience

A very good experience with Groundhopping Tours, from pre-booking inquiry over booking and info before departure to arrival at the hotel and the entire setup in Dortmund (where we saw Dortmund vs Gladbach) with stadium tour on Friday, match on Saturday and generally just good recommendations for the trip.

Groundhopping Tours gets my absolute warmest recommendation.

Good experience for Boca Juniors match

We were in Buenos Aires on holiday and bought tickets through Groundhopping Tours for Boca Juniors' home game.

Everything about the match worked perfectly with the local guide, so there was no reason for insecurity or confusion about the slightly complicated access procedure.

Things are under control when you buy tickets here - even if it's on the other side of the globe.
